Anatomy of a Magic Spell – The Art of Intention

In that video, I introduced the first part of my Anatomy of a Spell series, focusing on one of the most essential elements of spellwork: intention.

Types of Intentions

Inner / Self-Focused Intentions

These are intentions aimed at your personal growth or transformation, changing something within yourself or your emotional state.
Examples: seeking confidence, shadow work, healing, beauty spells, charisma, etc.

External / Other-Focused Intentions

These are intentions that are directed at the outer world or relationships, to shift conditions beyond yourself.
Examples: road opening, finding a romantic partner, breakup or binding spells.

Positive vs. Negative Intentions

“Negative” intentions bring harm or restrict free will. While some traditions reject these outright, here I approach them neutrally. Reflect on your own values before choosing.

Specific Event Intentions

These are intentions set to bring out a concrete, definable outcome or event.
Examples: winning a court case, finding love, landing a job.

Solo vs. Collective Intentions

Intentions set by an individual vs. those reinforced by a group, like covens, lodges, or prayer circles.

Scales of Intention

Match the scale of your intention with the energy, focus, and patience you’re willing to invest.

  • Small / Fast: Quick-turnaround goals (days or weeks). Examples: luck, a job interview, protection.
  • Medium: Takes patience as circumstances align. Examples: love spells, fertility, career shifts.
  • Large / Ongoing: Long-term outcomes. Examples: wealth, happiness, lifelong protection.

Do You Always Need to Set an Intention? Or Can You "Just do it"

Not always. If something happens effortlessly, you may not need the formality. But when focus or clarity is required, setting an intention makes the act official and shifts your mindset.

As a rule of thumb: if your instinct is “I should set an intention,” then do it.

Uncovering the True Source of Your Intentions

Understanding the source of your intention is how you give it meaning.  Ask yourself why this intention matters to you and what you hope to achieve on a deeper level.  Try to be honest about any emotions or pressures influencing it. The deeper you understand the “why,” the more focused and effective your work will be.  Below are some tips to analyze the deeper layers of your intention:

Ask yourself: Where is this want coming from?

Unmet Needs: Is it filling a gap in your life?

Ego: Is it about image, status, or pride?  Are you trying to repair, protect, or bolster your ego with this intention?

Pressure: Are there any outside forces shaping this, such as peer or social pressure, or a sense of obligation?

Fear / Anger / Envy:  These emotions are strong drivers, but need awareness.

Spiritual Drive: Are you feeling pulled by instinct, ancestors, or a higher calling?

Understanding the source gives your intention depth and direction.

Release the Pressure to Be “Practical”

Intentions are limitless. Don’t shrink them out of scarcity thinking. Stretch your imagination, even step-by-step, toward the fullest outcome.

Pitfalls to Avoid

Even when you have a clear intention and a solid understanding of its type, scale, and source, there are common behaviors and patterns that can quietly undermine your efforts. These pitfalls often show up unconsciously, which is why it is so important to recognize them before investing your energy.

For example, self-sabotage can appear as repeatedly pushing away opportunities or acting in ways that contradict your stated goals. You might intend to manifest a new job, a relationship, or personal growth, yet unconsciously procrastinate, avoid taking necessary steps, or dismiss chances that arise. Often, the surface-level intention feels compelling, but a deeper analysis may reveal that the action or inaction actually signals a lack of full commitment.

Another common pitfall is realizing that you do not actually want the outcome you are pursuing. Sometimes what feels like a goal or desire is driven by external pressure, societal expectations, or ego rather than genuine personal desire. Recognizing this can prevent wasted energy and disappointment and help you redirect your focus toward intentions that truly align with your authentic self.

Vagueness is another subtle but significant issue. If your intention is undefined or unclear, your energy system and your conscious efforts cannot fully support it. Being able to articulate exactly what you are aiming for in a concise, crystal-clear statement is crucial for effective manifestation.

Other pitfalls include overthinking, which can create mental blocks, relying too heavily on external factors you cannot control, or impatience, which leads to giving up before an intention has had time to fully unfold. By identifying these common obstacles, you create space to adjust your approach, maintain focus, and increase the likelihood that your intention will manifest in the way you truly desire.

Daily Alignment Tips

Even with a clear and well-defined intention, aligning your daily life to support it is key for manifestation. Small, consistent actions and mindful practices create momentum and strengthen the energy behind your intention. Here are some strategies to integrate into your everyday routine:

Set the Tone
Begin your day by intentionally tuning your energy. Journaling, meditation, or simply taking a few quiet moments to reflect on your intention can help you start the day grounded and focused. Think of it as calibrating your mind and energy to align with what you want to manifest. Starting your morning with this ritual reinforces clarity, emotional alignment, and focus for the day ahead.

Shift Your Thoughts
We all encounter negative thought patterns, doubts, or distractions. Catching these early is essential. If you notice yourself falling into worry or fear, consciously redirect your thoughts toward solutions, positive outcomes, or actionable steps. Anticipating common mental traps and planning how to address them keeps your energy focused and prevents unnecessary resistance from building around your intention.

Carry a Reminder
Keep your intention present throughout your day with symbols, notes, or small objects that act as tangible reminders. This could be a note on your fridge, a symbol on your desk, or an item you carry or wear. These cues serve as gentle nudges, helping you maintain awareness of your intention and reinforcing the mindset and energy necessary to manifest it.

Take Small Actions Daily
Manifestation is often the result of consistent, incremental effort rather than one dramatic action. Take one small step each day that supports your goal. Think of it like building a layered crepe cake—each small, deliberate action adds up over time, gradually constructing the outcome you are seeking. Consistency is more powerful than sporadic bursts of effort.

Track Your Language
The words you speak influence your energy and focus. Pay attention to how you phrase your intentions and goals. For example, instead of saying “I don’t want to be broke,” try “I am building financial stability.” The first focuses on fear, while the second directs your energy toward a positive, actionable outcome. Adjusting your language helps shape your mindset and reinforces the reality you are intending to create.

Celebrate Small Wins
Acknowledging progress, no matter how minor, reinforces your efforts and builds motivation. Every step forward, even tiny ones, matters. Celebrating small achievements keeps your energy positive and provides momentum that carries you closer to fully realizing your intention. Gratitude for these incremental successes strengthens both your focus and your alignment with your desired outcomes.

Intention is more than a wish, it’s a blend of clarity, meaning, emotional alignment, and conscious choice. When you set clear, well-understood intentions, you empower your magick, your energy work, and even your everyday goals.
